Dr Adele Janse van Rensburg

Position: Specialist Culture & Employee Experience
Organization: Transnet
Offering more than two decades of HR leadership in the mining industry, state owned organisations, and private consulting. Adelé holds a Ph.D from the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in Leadership, Performance and Change. She is passionate about changing environments through culture transformation, change management, leadership development, organisational effectiveness, organisational design, Neuro-link brain profile assessment and leadership coaching. Adele loves to transform abstract concepts into tangible strategies. And what is more abstract than the human mind? Her job is all about influencing the abstract (employees’ mindsets and beliefs) into tangible organization values driven behaviours. The challenge is to find common ground regarding everybody’s needs and wants, to identify those values that resonates with everybody and to identify initiatives and interventions that will make employees happy and the company profitable. In short, her focus is on fostering an environment where employees can thrive. She loves reading, and not intellectual novels, but every-day-run-of-the-mill romans novels. Why? Because she’s intrigued by the story. Even though she knows within the first 2 pages who will end up with who, their trials and tribulations, fears and hopes and how it influences their decisions and behaviours, fascinates her.

Session Overview

Culture-proofing Your Business
At Transnet, our employees are our heartbeat, and we understand that we should protect what we value most – our employees. So how do you protect your assets and your organisation against the constant “permacrisis” era that we operate in? By instilling an organizational culture that enables, empowers and inspires them. We needed a culture that is for our people, by our people. Therefore, Transnet’s culture transformation journey was grounded in a hybrid top-down and bottom-up approach – every employee had the opportunity to co-create it. We secured our culture fan through a verifiable process of validation, communication and transparency.
We realized that we have limited control of outside elements that may pose a threat to our assets (our employees) – but we can safeguard them though the following:
  1. Leadership
  2. Inclusion & Collaboration
  3. Training
  4. Reinforcement
  5. Change Management
On our culture transformation journey, we continually evolve and refine and identify new safeguards to protect our assets. We are intentional about choosing the right insurance for the right threat. We continue to pursue a high-performance culture to ensure our most valuable assets are well looked after.
Three Tangible Learnings:
  • Learning 1: Valuing employees – how to bring employees along on the journey
  • Learning 2: The importance of leadership
  • Learning 3: Consistency and transparency
