Azhar Aziz-Ismail is a lawyer qualified to practice in South Africa, Knowledge Manager at international law firm Baker McKenzie, and a legal innovator based in Johannesburg, with a passion for the intersection of law, technology and innovation. An alumnus of the University of Johannesburg, Azhar was named one of the Mail & Guardian 200 Young South Africans in 2025 in the Justice category. He is also a faculty member and alumnus of the UK-based Legal Technology & Innovation Institute, teaching classes on AI Chatbots in Law and Digital Transformation. Azhar was instrumental in launching the inaugural LawTech Live Conference in South Africa with the UK-based Legal Technology & Innovation Institute, helping to foster cross-border collaboration and innovation in the legal sector. He is also a Certified Generative AI Expert™ from Blockchain Council. Azhar is the youngest-ever Chairperson of the Johannesburg Attorneys’ Association (JAA) and serves on the Executive Committee of the Gauteng Attorneys Association (GAA), where he leads the Knowledge, Legal Tech, and Innovation portfolio. Over the last few years, Azhar has delivered seminars and guest lectures around Legal Technology, AI in Law and the Responsible, Appropriate & Ethical use of AI in Law across Southern Africa. Azhar is also an Ambassador of the South African Artificial Intelligence Association (SAAIA). He contributes to strategic knowledge initiatives that empower legal teams to work smarter and more ethically in a rapidly evolving digital world. Azhar is committed to mentoring the next generation of legal professionals to think critically, act ethically, and innovate boldly in the age of AI.
